Installing water efficient fixtures, systems, and appliances in a new build offers a range of benefits. Firstly, you can save on your future water costs. As we all know, conserving water is also incredibly important for the environment and saving this most precious resource can help to minimise the effects of water shortages and droughts. Here are four key ways in which you can make your new build more water efficient.

Select water efficient fixtures and appliances

The first thing that comes to mind for many people when they think of water efficiency, is often the appliances and fixtures in a home. We provide water efficient showerheads and dual flush toilets as standard, however it’s worth also considering your washing machine and dishwasher and potentially upgrading these to more efficient models (check out their water efficiency rating labels) when you move into your new home. This upgrade would not only conserve water but may also reduce your water costs, saving you money in the long run.

Collect rainwater

Including a rainwater tank is the perfect way to make use of the rainwater which would otherwise go to waste. Generally, this will considerably reduce the amount of water used in your home, as rainwater can be used for everything from doing laundry, flushing toilets, watering gardens right through to showering and drinking. The more your use your rainwater for, the more money you can potentially save.

Recycle grey water

Grey water is the waste water from your washing machine, showers, and potentially your dishwasher, and sinks. An option as part of your site connections, is to install a grey water recycling system. Recycled grey water is ideal for watering gardens and trees, conserving clean water for household use and the veggie garden (grey water is best avoided for edible plants). 
 

Outdoor water use

If you’re wanting to cut down on your water use, whilst still having a thriving garden, it’s best to water your plants early in the day or late in the afternoon. Watering in the heat of the day leads to evaporation of the water before the plant has time to make use of it, so always be mindful of when you water your outdoor plants. Another tip is to replace non-indigenous plants that require large amounts of water with Australian natives that can withstand dry conditions.
