There are a number of different types of cooktops in today’s market. We look at the different types available and the advantages and disadvantages of each.   Size Knowing what size cooktop is needed is the first step. Consider how many burners you'll need and what size is best. If you don’t do a lot of cooking or have limited space in your kitchen design, a four-burner 60cm cooktop should be sufficient. If you have a big kitchen and tend to cook meals for a big family or entertain often, a 90cm cooktop with five or six burners may suit your needs better. Make sure you work out the space you have available before deciding on which size works best. Once you have decided on the size of cooktop, it's time to choose the type and look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.    Induction Induction cooktops use a magnetic field to heat up the cookware, but you must use cookware that is compatible with induction burners. Although you may need to buy new compatible cookware, induction cooktops have many benefits as well. They heat up quickly and are extremely efficient, and they don't get as hot as electric burners. If safety is a top priority, induction cooktops could be a great choice.    Ceramic Electric Ceramic electric cooktops are easy to install and affordable, and so they are a great choice for many people. However they don't heat up as quickly or as efficiently as other choices.   Gas If you want precise temperature control, a gas cooktop is a great idea. Gas stoves heat up quickly, heat your cookware evenly, and you can see the level of the flame as you adjust the temperature. Gas supply can be a drawback, though, as not all homes have gas lines installed, and installing one can be pricey. Gas cooktops can also be a little harder to clean than other options.   Cooktops are a centrepiece A cooktop is often the centerpiece of your kitchen. A good cooktop will last a long time so it’s worth doing some research before selecting one.
